Description of the persimmon tomato variety

Tomatoes are annual, self-pollinating plants of the nightshade family. Persimmon is a medium-ripening variety. It takes 100-115 days from seedlings to ripening.

The root system is well developed. The main mass of the roots is located at a depth of 10-40 cm. The development and location of the root system depends on the method of cultivation, physical properties of the soil, its humidity, etc.

The plant is medium-grown. The stem height reaches 80-100 cm. The bush is vigorous, with a large number of light green leaves.

The leaves of this tomato variety are unpaired. Side branches (stepchildren) are produced in the axils of the leaves. The stems located directly below the inflorescences are most strongly developed.

Flowers are yellow, gathered in simple inflorescences. The first inflorescence is set above the seventh leaf.

Fruits are rounded, medium to large in size, with a slight flattening. The color of the rind varies from light yellow to orange during ripening. The flesh of tomatoes is tender, juicy and fleshy. The taste of the fruit is sweet, with a slight hint of acidity. 1 tomato weighs from 100 to 250 g, in the brush there are 2-3 pieces. The yield is 4-5 kg per plant. A feature of this variety is a small number of seeds.

The persimmon variety is not a fast ripening variety, so in many regions it is grown by seedling. To obtain seedlings, sow from mid to late March in greenhouses or in film shelters. Sowing per 1 sq. m requires 3 to 4 g of seeds. Sprouts appear in about a week.

To prevent fungal diseases and phytophthora, it is advisable to disinfect the seeds and soil before sowing with special seed dressing preparations or a weak solution of manganese solution.

After sproutsing, in the phase of 2-3 leaves, seedlings are piked into cups or seedling boxes, providing 10x10 cm feeding area at a depth of       1,5-2 cm.

No pulling of plants should be allowed. It should not be forgotten that the main reasons for the elongation of seedlings are lack of light, high temperature, air and soil humidity.

Mark!  High humidity is especially dangerous in the last phases of seedling development.

The planting period is usually about 60 days. During this time, it is advisable to water the plants regularly as the top layers of soil dry out. Feed with a complex fertilizer after 10-14 days.

When plants are planted in the open ground, begin hardening a week before planting. Take the boxes with seedlings outside at first for 1 hour, and then increase the hardening time to a full day.

Directly before planting, cut beds. Since this tomato variety is tall, it is suggested that it be tied to stakes or other support. This should be done loosely, passing the twine in a figure of eight, so that the plants were comfortable to grow and develop. Plant the seedlings in a row in a 50x40 cm pattern with a row spacing of 80-90 cm.

A bucket of humus or compost and 2 tablespoons of ash should be applied to each square meter. If this organic fertilizer is not available, a special tomato fertilizer mix of 1 tbsp. per hole can be applied.

The cultivation technique for the persimmon tomato variety is classic.

Growing season care consists of regular loosening, watering, feeding, weeding, and disease and pest control:

  • to avoid root damage loosen the soil to a shallow depth;  
  • watering 2 times a week at the rate of 2-3 liters of water per plant;

  • feeding plants with organic and mineral fertilizers gives very good results. Fertilizing with slurry (solution of cow manure in water at a ratio of 1:6) or ammonium nitrate 15-20 g per 1 sq. m. The first fertilization is carried out in 15-20 days after planting, usually with the appearance of the 1st fruit, subsequent - every 15-20 days, simultaneously with the next watering. Fertilizing should be done until the beginning of August;
  • Special attention should be paid to shaping the bush, i.e. stepgrassing (removal of side branches). Prick the persimmon once, removing all shoots that form in the axils of the first 4-5 leaves of the main stem, counting from the bottom up. The bush becomes compact. It is easier to tie. The yield is not decreased by this method, and the fruits are larger than in the 2-stem formation;
  • Fungicide should be sprayed a week after planting to prevent phytophthora.

The following advantages of this tomato variety are:

  • this tomato can be grown in a vegetable garden, in a greenhouse and even on a windowsill;
  • high seed germination, which reaches 90%;
  • fruits are thick. Proven good for transportation and storage. Tomatoes can be harvested in the phase of milky ripeness, because they mature well outside the bush, while retaining all the useful properties;
  • have a beautiful appearance. Distinguished from other varieties by a warm, yellow color that pleases the eye. The flesh is fleshy, juicy and sweet, with a pleasant sour note;
  • good yield. Fruits can reach a weight of 500 g;
  • the variety is versatile in use: it can be preserved for the winter in the form of preserves and beautiful, tasty salads;
  • fruits are characterized by high carotene and lycopene content and almost absence of organic acids. Perfect for diet food.

My personal review of the persimmon tomato variety

We have been growing the persimmon tomato variety on our garden plot relatively recently. Like many other gardeners, we like this variety because of its bright yellow color and great taste.

The main advantage of this variety is the sunny orange color of the fruit, due to which it received its name as a persimmon. For me and mine, it is perfect because it can be eaten by allergy sufferers and diabetics.

Growing tomatoes of this variety requires constant care. They are demanding:

  1. Heat. The optimum temperature for normal development is 18 to 30 degrees. Temperatures below 15 degrees stop flowering. At high temperatures (above 30-32 degrees), the leaves become small and the branches thin, and the danger of flower fall increases. High temperatures cause sunburn to the fruits if they are not shaded by leaves.
  2. To light. Persimmon tomatoes do not yield well in shaded areas, such as between the rows of a fruit orchard.
  3. To soil and air moisture. Especially during the first half of the growing season. They develop best when soil moisture is above 70-80% PPV and relative air moisture is 50-60%. At high soil and air moisture, plants are damaged by blackleg and become severely elongated.
  4. To crop rotation. Crop rotation must be considered when growing this variety. It is desirable to plant after legumes and pumpkin crops. And never after peppers, eggplants and potatoes.
  5. To soil preparation. Soil preparation shall be done from autumn: we make digging to the depth of 15-18 cm, add manure, potash fertilizers and 2/3 dose of superphosphate, as the plant requires calcium and potassium in the soil.
