General characteristics of the crop

In nature, the panicle hydrangea occurs as deciduous shrubs and trees up to 8 m high. Its natural habitat is the temperate and subtropical areas of Japan, China and southern Sakhalin, mostly in elevated areas (average height 1300m).

The hydrangea was first described by the German physician and botanist Philipp Franz von Siebold in 1829, during his work in Japan. It was not until 30 years later that he was able to send the studied cultivar to Europe, now known as the \"Grandiflora\" variety.

The selection of the panicle hydrangea on a large scale began only in the mid-20th century. The main focus of modern breeding is to reduce plant size, increase frost resistance, and produce unusual colors and pompoms.

Big-leaf hydrangea (lat. Hydrangea paniculata) belongs to the hydrangea family.   It has a number of advantagesin terms of cultivation compared to other hydrangea species:

  • use both acidic and slightly alkaline soils;
  • allow bright light (except midday) and penumbra;
  • not overly demanding of moisture;
  • frost-resistant root system and shoots covered by fall with a special bark layer;
  • no complicated winter sheltering;
  • generating inflorescences on the buds of the current year;
  • the panicle hydrangea is among the most sought-after cultivars for gardening and landscape design.

From negative qualities, the plant has a rather long maturity period. It does not start flowering until the 4th or 5th year after planting a rooted cuttings.

Each variety of panicle hydrangea has its own individual characteristics. In general, however, the crop has general characteristics, which include:

  1. The root system is strong; the main part goes deep into the ground, the lateral part extends widely over the surface (corresponding to the diameter of the bush).
  2. The type of shoots - quickly dormant (covered with bark).
  3. Leaves - 8-15 cm long, mostly oval in shape, toothed, pointed at the apex.
  4. Leaf color - green, of varying intensity.
  5. Leaf arrangement - symmetrical relative to each other, and trefoils possible.
  6. Foliage loss - deciduous crop.
  7. Flowering period - spring to late autumn (individual dates depending on cultivar).
  8. Type of inflorescence - panicle.
  9. Flower shape - pyramidal.
  10. Flower size - large, average (25-30 cm), maximum - up to 40 cm.
  11. Flowers in inflorescence - fruiting - small, yellowish; sterile - with 4-5 white sepals, later changing color.
  12. Flowers - white, pink, red, lime green and their shades.
  13. Fruit-bearing - there are 2 types of flowers in the inflorescence: fruit-bearing (in the center) and barren (at the edges).
  14. Fruits - a capsule with 2-5 chambers with numerous small seeds.
  15. Average annual growth of 15-20 cm.

The best planting option is purchased seedlings (4- 5 years old), that take root and start blooming the year they are planted.

Planting the plant in the open ground

Selection of planting location and time

The panicle hydrangea is not a fastidious crop, but certain site selection rules exist for this species.

The basic requirements for placementof the plant on the plot are as follows:

  1. Most varieties tolerate the penumbra well. However, good light (from 6 hours a day) is still required for a full, long and abundant flowering. It is extremely undesirable to be under the rays of the scorching sun at noon (from 12-00 to 15-00) to avoid burns of leaves and inflorescences, as well as overheating of roots.
  2. Availability of protection from wind (fence, taller trees), but they should not significantly shade the shrub.
  3. Remote from the surface of soil waters (not less than 1.5 m). Lowland areas where stagnation is possible are also unacceptable.
  4. No plantings with a similar surface-lateral root system within a radius of 2 m or more to allow the plant access to moisture and nutrients.

Putting open ground panicle hydrangea is best done in spring to allow it to take root and develop before winter. In southern areas, the procedure can also be done in autumn (at the beginning of the period).

Preparing the soil

For the normal growth and abundant flowering of the panicle hydrangea, a soil with certain characteristics is required: well drained, air- and water permeable, with a neutral or slightly acidic level of acid-alkaline balance. Sandy soil is not recommended for the plant.

The depth of the planting hole should be approximately twice the volume of the root with a root ball attached to it (40-60 cm) and other dimensions (length, width) from 50x50 cm. Soil is dug out of the hole, and 2 buckets of water is poured into the hole for soaking. The next day, this space is filled with a mixture of peat, humus, sod soil and pure river sand in the proportion: 2:2:1:1 respectively.

Hydrangea panicle (80 photos): description, varieties, planting and care | Gardeners Info

Mineral fertilizersare additionally added to the above substance:

  • superphosphate         - 65 g;
  • potassium sulfate   &nbsp      - 25 g;
  • urea                - 25 g.

Depending on the variety (compact or spreading bush), plant 1.5 to 2.5 m apart.

The plant should not be significantly deepened. It is necessary that its root system be at the same level with the ground, even slightly translucent.

Immmediately after planting, the hydrangea should be abundantly watered, and a layer of mulch of peat, bark, needles or similar materials should be arranged. This will later be an effective way to control weeds and retain moisture.

Care

Watering

Mixed hydrangeas like moist soil, but do not tolerate stagnant water.

Use soft water (pH<5.5), of comfortable temperature, or if using tap water variant - pre-distilled water. Water the shrubs regularly throughout the growing season.

The following watering scheduleis necessary for young seedlings:

  • First two weeks           - once every 2 days on average;
  • from 2 weeks to a month       - 2 times a week;
  • from one month                       -  1-2 times a week.

A mature plant needs 20-30 liters of water per bush to fully soak its roots. The frequency of watering depends on specific weather conditions and may range from 1-2 times per week to 2 times per month.

Hydrangea panicle (80 photos): description, varieties, planting and care | Gardeners Info

Mulching around the shrub roots (2-3 times during the summer) helps to retain moisture for longer.

Feeding

All varieties of panicle hydrangea require periodic fertilization. For this purpose, you can buy ready-made special fertilizers for flowering crops, as well as prepare them yourself from a set of mineral complexes.

Gardeners positively characterize the following preparations: \"Agricola\", \"Bona Forte\", \"Compo\", \"Kristalon\", \"Pokon\", \"Tsvetalon\" and \"Fertika\".

Кустарники should be fully fertilized four times:

  1. In early spring just after the snow falls. At this time it is recommended to apply organic matter - solution of cow dung or poultry manure.
  2. In the period of active bud formation, which falls on average in the middle of June. Water the shrub bedding circle with a solution with the addition of:
  • superphosphate          - 35 g;
  • potassium sulfate - 35 g;
  • carbamide              - 25 g.

Consumption is per 10 liters of water applied per 1m2 area.

  1. In midsummer - during flowering of most varieties. Watering is made with a complex granular fertilizer (25-35 g per bucket of water). The recommended rate per adult bush is 2-3 buckets.
  2. Before preparing the shrub for winter, it is better to use nitrogen-free fertilizer for hydrangeas.

Add to the above fertilisers, liquid manure at the rate of 1kg per bucket of water and a sprinkling of humus under the shrub can be used.

Hyperactivating flowering is helped by a gibberellin solution (5%). Achieve better shoot flexibility with periodic watering with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Hydrangea panicle (80 photos): description, varieties, planting and care | Gardeners Info

Till fall, nitrogen-containing formulations should be removed from fertilization, as they provoke growth of green mass, but potassium-phosphorous types that strengthen the root system should be added.

Roeing the soil

Good air permeability of the soil is required to allow oxygen to reach the hydrangea root system. This is achieved by loosening the area around the shrub to a depth of no more than 4-6 cm so as not to damage the surface lateral roots. The operation should be carried out regularly as the soil in the area of the root circle becomes compacted.

Trimming

The shrub should be regularly pruned to form the desired size and beautiful shape.

Planned formative pruning work is performed in autumn. The varietal characteristics must always be taken into account. Short varieties should be cut to a height of 30-40 cm so that 5-8 buds are left on the plant. For large hydrangeas, the recommended height is 1m. Strong shoots will grow in spring and the plant will reach its optimum size in the season. It is mainly the dried out, thinned and damaged areas that are removed. It should be done before the buds open and the sap begins to move, otherwise the plant may die.

One pruning every 8 years is recommended. The stems are cut as low as possible in the fall to produce new, stronger branches later in the spring.

Hydrangea panicle (80 photos): description, varieties, planting and care | Gardeners Info

The strong pruning will produce fewer inflorescences and larger ones. On tall shoots, the number of flower stalks is increased, but their quality suffers.

Winter preparation

Despite the high frost resistance of the panicle hydrangea, certain work to prepare it for the winter season should still be done.

In adult plants, only the root system must be covered. In such cases, you can use decomposed manure, peat or fallen leaves by spreading 15-20 cm of the above materials around the shrub.

In the coldest regions, a frame should be constructed to protect the branches, covered with polyethylene film and secured with stones.

Fragile shrubs should be tied up for winter, otherwise heavy snow may break the young stems. Covering should be done only with young plants planted in the fall.

Diseases and pests

Hortensia melanchata, like all members of this family, is fairly resistant to disease. But some fungal and viral infections are susceptible too.

In most cases, the bad health of the plant is explained by improper care and violation of agrotechnical rules:

  1. The appearance of yellow leaves. Causes can be excessive light or sunlight during hot afternoons, poor soil, increased alkalinity of soil.
  2. Leaf desiccation due to inadequate watering and scarcity of soil.
  3. Dry blackening of the leavesis due to burns from direct exposure to the midday sun and the use of too hard water.
  4. Wet leaf blackening is caused by drastic temperature changes, poor soil loosening and excessive moisture.

When care recommendations are followed, such pathologies can be avoided. Fertilizing with aluminum sulfate and adding a few drops of lemon juice to watering water are recommended to increase the crop's resistance to negative environmental factors.

  1. Chlorosis is a common problem of panicle hydrangeas. Outwardly, it appears as a lightening of the leaves while the veins retain their color. The disease is caused by a metabolic disorder resulting in iron deficiency. In this case, treatment is already required, which is possible in the following ways:
  • alternative watering (2-3 times) with solutions of potassium nitrate and sulfuric iron (in equal proportion - 40 g of salt per 10 liters of water);
  • using ready-made preparations containing iron - \"Agricola\", \"Antichloroz\" and \"Feurovit\";
  •  spraying the shrub and in neglected cases watering at the root with an unsaturated solution of iron sulfate or citric acid.

Common diseases of hydrangeas include: White rot, gray rot, rust, powdery mildew, peronosporosis, and septoriosis, caused by fungi:

  1. White rotis active in high humidity conditions. Darkening of shoots first appears followed by a white coating of leaves. If treatment is not begun in time, the plant may die because of nutrient deficiency.

Sick areas are separated and destroyed. The bush is treated with Bordeaux liquid or copper sulfate solution, but fungicides such as \"Fundazol\", \"Fitosporin\" and \"Chistotsvet\" have proven better. If severely affected by white rot, it is better to get rid of the bush.

  1. Gray rot appears as a gray layer on various parts of the plant under which tissue softens, shrinks and dies, forming holes. Such parts are removed. Scor, Fondazol and Chitotsvet are used for treatment as well as Rovral Flo 255 SC (periodicity of application is 3 times with an interval of 3 weeks).

Fungal diseases are much less common in hydrangeas, such as ascochytosis, phyllostictosis and fusariosis. As with all fungal diseases, the affected areas are removed and various fungicides are used to control them.

From viral infections the most frequent damage is caused by Ring Spotting. It appears as fairly large spots (up to 2 cm) on leaves which begin to dry, then die off. The disease has a negative effect on the formation of buds. Since it is impossible to cure the disease, it is advisable to remove the badly affected plants.

Most dangerous to hydrangeas are pests: aphids, spider mite, nematodes, leaf-eaters and snails. With small invasions of aphids and mites affected parts are sprayed with a solution of laundry soap, and snails are collected by hand. In all other cases, a fairly wide range of insecticides - Akarin, Aktofit, Calypso, Komandor, Lightning, Tanrek, Thiofos, and Fitoverm - can help.
